5 Of the best things to do along the Kerry Wild Atlantic way

The wild Atlantic way covers the entirety of the west of Ireland.

This stunning path is popular with locals and tourists alike. County Kerry, one of the areas located along the Wild Atlantic Way, is home to some of the most stunning views on this route. In addition, the area offers some of the best experiences known to man. Whether you’re a calm and collected type or desperate for adrenaline, we’re confident there will be something on this list to catch your fancy. Here are the five best things to do along the Kerry Wild Atlantic Way.

kenmare watersports

1. Kenmare Watersports

Though there are plenty of spots to do various kinds of watersports along the Kerry Wild Atlantic Way, the number and variety on offer in Kenmare is truly incredible. Ranging from your run-off-the-mill sailing and kayaking to the more adventurous water ski-in, water trampoline and even banana boats up for rent, you’ll have an action packed day (as well as being completely knackered at the end of it).

Skelligs Chocolate Factory

2. Skelligs Chocolate Factory

Whether you’re traveling in a couple or as a family, chances are you’ll have a chocoholic in the party and what better way to keep them happy than to visit a chocolate factory? Being able to view the chocolates being made, ask questions about the processes and (most immportantly) taste the treats on offer, this is a great way to kill a couple of hours. There’s even an onsite shop so you can take the taste of Skellig with you on the rest of your journey!

mount-brandon

3. Mount Brandon Walk

Not for the fainthearted, this walk takes an average of around 4.5 hours and rises a staggering 952 metres. This moderate to difficult walk might sound challenging but it is well worth the effort as Mount Brandon is steeped in Irish mythology and pagan history. With views inland, out to sea and even overlooking an estuary, this walk is like no other you’ll experience in Kerry.

rose of tralee

4. Rose of Tralee International Festival

Tralee is the heart of Kerry and the Rose of Tralee Festival aims to celebrate all that the town has to offer. Running for a week in August every year for the past 58 years, the festival culminates in a celebration that brings together women of Irish descent from all over the world. The celebration of Irish culture is so richly engrained in County Kerry that you’d be a fool to miss out on the atmosphere.

Carrigafoyle Castle

5. Carrigafoyle Castle

With history coming out of its ears and more than impressive surroundings, Carrigafoyle Caste is an absolute must for all history buffs. Having been one of the most important structures in Irish history by commanding a strategic placement over important shipping lanes, it became the heart of a siege in 1579.

County Kerry offers up such a varied range of activities that you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere more versatile in keeping groups of travelers happy in the world. Beautiful, historic and a dominant force in drawing people to the Kerry Wild Atlantic Way, you’ll find more than enough things to do that will keep you all entertained for days.

I hope you enjoy your time along the Wild Atlantic Way and if you get tired and need a pick me up, call in to us at the Bookshelf Coffee House in Tralee for the best coffee on the Wild Atlantic Way.
